Abstract

1319210 Data card and reader BLISS & LAUGHLIN INDUSTRIES Inc 24 Sept 1971 [29 Sept 1970] 44644/71 Heading G4M [Also in Division B6] Card such as a credit card, identification card, railway ticket has "fibres" which may be metal wires or glass or synthetic fibres which extend between two edges of the card. As described light-transmitting fibres 30 are used which may extend between opposite edges (Fig. 11) or adjacent edges (Fig. 10B, not shown) and may extend between both pairs of opposite edges on a rectangular card (Fig. 12, not shown). Selected fibres may be broken, incomplete or be heat treated to render their light path discontinuous to enable binary data such as b.c.d. to be stored. The cards may be read in parallel using a plurality of light sources and detectors (Fig. 10, not shown) or read bit by bit (Fig. 11). In the latter card 72 is held stationary while reader 96 is moved in the direction of arrow 98. A lamp 102 at one end energizes a photodetector 106 at the other end which supplies a signal via a brush 112 to contacts 114. A further brush engages contacts 122 interconnected by resistors 128 supplying a signal to a decoder 132 identifying the position of the reader relative to the card. The data is fed to apparatus 142 which may be a display or a printer.
