Abstract

1329435 Insulated road surfaces SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 10 Nov 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 53419/70 Addition to 1180689 Heading E1G In a method and apparatus for constructing an insulated road surface on a prepared and levelled road bed, the bed is covered successively with (a) a layer of bituminous material - e.g. by hot-spray apparatus 3; (b) a layer of sheet material - e.g. paper, P.V.C. or glass fibre mat 5 from a reel 4; (c) a sprayed insulation layer of rigid polyurethane foam - e.g. by liquid spray nozzles 8; A poured concrete or bituminous surface top layer is subsequently applied by undisclosed means. The apparatus shown is driven by endless tracks 1, the sheet material 5 being applied by a pressure roller 7. The front and rear spray nozzles 3, 8 are supplied from tanks not shown and may be fixed on the apparatus or may reciprocate transversely to the direction of travel. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a trailer carrying a roll of sheet material, a pressure roller (17) and rear polyurethane spray apparatus (18) is articulated to a vehicle provided with four fixed bitumen-spray nozzles (13).
