Abstract

1329190 Epoxy resins; coating compositions CIBA-GEIGYAG 19 Nov 1971 53872/71 Headings C3B and C3R [Also in Division C7] Curable resins are prepared by reacting dimethylolpropionic acid with an epoxy resin having an epoxide equivalent weight of 180- 530, in the absence of an externally added esterification catalyst. The epoxy resin may be a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A which is liquid at room temperature. Reaction may take place at 135-180‹ C., optionally in the presence of a dibasic acid, e.g. azelaic acid and/or a dihydric alcohol, e.g. 1,4-butanediol. Products containing COOH groups may be rendered water dispersible by neutralization, e.g. with an alkanolamine. Coating compositions may be prepared by mixing the amine neutralized resins with melamine - formaldehyde condensates.
