1329022 Quinophthalone dyes SANDOZ Ltd 27 Oct 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 50892/70 Addition to 1324389 Heading C4P Quinophthalone dyes have the formula wherein X is S, SO 2 , O or -NR-, R is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted, Y is a direct linkage or a divalent hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted and may be interrupted by hetero atoms, Z is an alkylene radical which may be substituted, A(-) is an anoin and K(+) is a group of formula wherein R 1 , R 7 and R 2 are alkyl or cycloalkyl, R 3 and R 4 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or acyl, R 5 , R 6 , R 8 and R 10 are hydrocarbon radicals and R 9 is amino or hydrocarbon, the alkyl, cycloalkyl, amino and hydrocarbon radicals being substituted or the radicals R 1 and R 2 , R 1 and R 3 , R 2 and R 4 , R 5 and R 6 or R 5 , R 6 and R; may together with the nitrogen atoms to which they are attached amino and hydrocarbon radicals being optionally substituted or the radicals R 1 and R 2 , R 1 and R 3 , R 2 and R 4 , R 5 and R 6 or R 5 , R 6 and R 7 may together with the nitrogen atoms to which they are attached complete heterocyclic nuclei e.g. a pyridine nucleus and the group Z, together with the nitrogen atom to which it is attached completes a heterocyclic nucleus. The dyes are prepared by quaternizing compounds of the formulae with an appropriate quaternizing agent. The dyes may also be prepared by methods analogous to those described in Specification 1,324,389. 4 - (2 - Chloroethylmercapto)- 3 - hydroxy - quinophthalone is prepared by reacting 4 - bromo - 3 - hydroxyquinophthalone with 2-mercapaoethanol and treating the product with thionylchloride.
