1328982 Friction clutches DAVID BROWN TRACTORS Ltd 7 July 1971 [10 July 1970 15 Feb 1971] 33566/70 and 4685/71 Heading F2C In an engine and wet clutch combination in which a clutch mechanism is secured to a flywheel 12 on an engine crankshaft 11, and the clutch and flywheel are enveloped by a housing 13 the bottom of which forms a sump, a trough 42 and a notch 45 forms a well which surrounds the lower portions of the clutch and flywheel 12, the flywheel having an annular groove 43 in its face, fed by oil from the notch (which has a lip as shown), passages 46 within the flywheel leading the oil from the groove to the clutch. The groove 43 has an annular plate 44 projecting radially inward over part of the groove. The clutch shown has a first driven plate 18 secured to a hub 17 splined to a power take-off shaft 14, this biased into engagement by springs (not shown) acting on a dished member 20, and further driven plates 28 secured to hubs 27 on a tube 25 leading to a gearbox, springs 33 acting on a presser plate 32 biasing them into engagement. A collar 41 and levers 37 serve to disengage the clutch, plates 28 being disengaged before plate 18. Interposed between plates 18 and 28 are presser plates 30 and 22, with peripheral teeth engaging corresponding ones in the flywheel. In a non-stationary installation, such as a tractor, a gutter 50 is provided to catch oil thrown up by flywheel and clutch and feed it through a pipe 51 to the area of the notch, although this pipe may be dispensed with in a stationary installation. Some means to prevent oil from falling directly on to flywheel and clutch is always provided. The clutch linings can be sintered bronze or so called "paper" linings.
