Abstract

1328928 Electro-plating with ruthenium alloy SEL-REX CORP 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 23900/71 Headings C7A, C7B Ru alloy is electro-plated from an aqueous composition which comprises (a) between 0À5 and 50g/l of Ru in the form of the complex (NH 4 ) 3 [Ru 2 Cl 8 (H 2 O) 2 N], (b) 0À05 to 20g/l in total of at least one metal selected from Rh, Pt, Pd, Os and Ir in the form of a water soluble compound thereof and optionally (c) at least one metal selected from In, Ga and T1 in the form of a water soluble compound thereof. The compound (b) and (c) may be salts of H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , HCl, HBr, HClO 4 , CCl 3 COOH or CF 3 COOH or may be complex chelates with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, its disodium salt or acetylacetonates. Objects to be coated may be self-conductors such as brass plated with Au or may be non-conductors which have been rendered conductors e.g. by electroless plating. Specified electro-plating conditions are current densities between 0À1 and 40A/dm<SP>2</SP>, a bath temperature between 15 and 95‹C and a pH maintained below 3À0, e.g. controlled by adding HCl, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , sulphamic acid, HBr, HClO 4 , aryl sulphonic acid, alkyl sulphonic acids or buffering compounds such as NaH 2 PO 4 , Na 2 HPO 4 , KHSO 4 or salts of strong acids with weak organic or inorganic bases (e.g. triethylamine, piperidine, morpholine, piperazine, ethylene diamine or ammonia). In the Examples, baths comprise (NH 4 ) 3 RU 2 Cl 8 (H 2 O) 2 N, indium sulphate, and ammonium sulphamate together with thodium sulphate or Na 2 PtCl 6 or PdCl 2 . Specified deposited alloys contained (i) 66%Ru, 33%Rh and 1%In, (ii) 67%Ru and 33%Rh and (iii) 40%Ru, 59%Rh and 1%In. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1244309.
