1328630 Boots &c FORTUNA-WERKE MASCHINENFABRIK AG 3 Sept 1971 41166/71 Heading A3B A machine for roughening the lasting margin 1a of a shoe upper 1 includes a roughing tool, e.g. a grinding band 8, which moves forwards and backwards along a path A parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shoe, and a shoe support which pivots the shoe to one side (+C) during the forward movement (+A) of the tool and to the other side (-C) during the return movement (-A) of the tool so that the tool roughness the entire lasting margin 1a. The machine includes a control circuit which tilts the shoe, holds it for a time delay in its tilted position and then returns it to its initial position during each lengthwise movement of the tool. The last is supported by a last pin 3 and a toe rest 4 and is tilted by a motor 5. The toe rest 4 can be adjusted to the length of the shoe by hand wheel 6. The control circuit for controlling the tilting of the last includes a potentiometer 9 having a movable tag 17 which is connected via rod 13, gears 14 and cable 15 to the tool 8 so that the voltage at the tap 17 is directly proportional to the distance of the tool 8 from the toe of the last. As the tool moves away from the toe this voltage increases and switch means, which are responsive to predetermined voltages, cause the motor 5 to tilt the last, hold it in its tilted position for a time delay and then return it to its initial position. The switch means can be adjusted to vary the positions at which the last is tilted and the speed of the tilt to suit lasts of different shapes. When the toe rest 4 is adjusted longitudinally (B) it moves a tap 19 on potentiometer 18 to vary the voltage supplied to potentiometer 9 so that the tilting of the last is automatically adjusted according to the length of the last.
