Abstract

Vessels for bulk cargoes are divided into a number of distinct holds A<1>, each hold being fitted with a pyramidal or conical top 'A<2> having a large central opening a'. A series of baffle-plates D with slits or openings d are situated beneath each of the hatchways to the hold. These baffle plates are adjustable vertically, so that when loose cargo is shot into the hold it is automatically trimmed by passing through or over the baffle plates. Conveyers are fitted to each hold for discharging the cargo, and the ventilating cowls are made collapsible for convenience when loading. A reciprocating rake fitted over the conveyer prevents choking. Pipes connect the various holds to permit free circulation of the air, and the forward bulkheads are inclined, as shown.
