[Class 137] In the ventilation of goods stored in bulk, such as grain, which allow of the passage of air, flues f leading into vertical stacks a, b, c; d are provided in the material for the admission or evacuation of air and arranged to define zones of parallel-piped shape, which may be juxtaposed. In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown a single zone with two horizontal flues f each communicating with vertical stacks a, b supplied with air from a pipe s and having pistons h movable by a cable m to open or close the passage of air from the source s and stacks a, b to the flues f. Each of the stacks serves at will either for supplying air to, or for evacuation of air from, the mass of grain. By this means, the direction of the currents of ventilating air are changed to ensure full ventilation of the mass. Figs. 3 and 4 show the arrangement of flues in silos of considerable height divided into superposed zones. The stacks a, b may be used alternately for inlet and evacuation, and stacks c, d for evacuation only, the stacks a, b being provided with the pistons h controlling the air supply. Flues f serve either as inlet and evacuation flues, and flues e as evacuation flues only. Lateral air passages g form shunt passages which permit air to reach the top of the stack when the piston is at the level of the shunt passage. Valves p control the passage of air into one or other of the stacks a, b. Fig. 7 shows in horizontal section the arrangement of flues and stacks for a group of contiguous units of a silo.
