Abstract

1328360 Fastenings; hinges &c BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 5 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 48053/70 Headings E2A and E2F [Also in Division B7] A releasable fastening device includes three elements, a first element 10 having a series of spaced co-axial tubes 11, a second element 12 having a further series of spaced co-axial tubes 13 each of which has a longitudinal slot 14 formed through its wall and extending the full length thereof, the width of each slot being substantially less than the common internal diameter of the tubes, the axial spacing of the tubes of each series being such that the tubes can lie in alternate co-axial relationship, and a third element having a series of spaced coaxial rod portions 15 formed so as to be a sliding fit within the tubes and inter-connected by connecting portions 16 of a cross-section such that they can pass through the slots 14, the length of the connecting portions and of the rod portions being such that when the tubes of each element are engaged in alternate co-axial relationship the rod portions can each lie in a first position partly within a tube of the first element and partly within the tube of the second element but can be axially moved to lie in a second position wholly within a tube of the first element, each connecting portion being then aligned with the slot in a tube of the second element. As shown, a cable 16 extends continuously through the rods 15 which are swaged on to the cable, one or both ends 15a of the rods being tapered; alternatively, the rods are connected by integral flattened portions and a lever is provided to rotate the rods. The device may be used for the attachment of a panel to an aperture in the skin of an aircraft.
