Abstract

1328231 Laminates SUN CHEMICAL CORP 10 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 38399/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Compositions capable of being polymerized by the action of actinic or high energy ionizing radiation and useful as laminating adhesives comprise (i) at least one isocyanate-modified (i.e. modified by reaction with an orgaic isocyanate) ester having two or more terminal or pendent ethylenic groups and (ii) at least one photo-initiator. The adhesive is cured in situ in the laminate assembly by exposing it to radiation such as UV light, electron beam or gamma radiation. Component (i) of the adhesive may be, for example, a mixture of pentaerythritol triacrylate and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, the hydroxyl content of which mixture is reacted with phenyl isocyanate. In examples the following film substrate combinations are laminated at 150‹ F. and 50 lb/inch pressure: Cellophane-Cellophane,Cellophanepolypropylene, and polypropylene-Mylar (Cellophane and Mylar are Registered Trade Marks).
