Abstract

1328140 Beta irradiation apparatus E B MAMIN V A MAKAROV G P KORNEEVA B S POPPEL and V I NANOV 6 Nov 1970 52898/70 Heading H5R A beta irradiation apparatus is divided into at least two compartments each of which accommodates a holder, each holder accommodating at least two hermetic capsules containing a beta-emitting radioisotope, whereby rearrangement of the irradiation pattern is facilitated. As shown, the irradiator 1 is divided into six compartments, each of which can accommodate a holder for seven capsules containing disc-shaped strontium beta sources, the distribution of the holders in the compartments and of the capsules in the holder-into which dummy sources may also be introduced, permitting adjustment of the radiation field. Stainless steel clad lead blocks shield the top and sides of the irradiator, openings through one side, protected by a door, permitting loading of the holders into the irradiator by use of a container (Fig. 4, not shown) for the holders which has dowels to engage in holes 14 corresponding to the desired compartment. A W-shaped trolley 9 introduces the specimen to be irradiated, and also provides shielding at the ends and bottom of the irradiator (Fig. 2, not shown). The trolley is maintained in position; and the shielding completed, by insertion of the cylindrical locators 10. While one specimen is irradiated, another may be prepared for irradiation on the other section of the trolley.
