Abstract
1328115 Alpha-ferric oxide hydrate EASTMAN KODAK CO 11 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969 25 Sept 1969] 43566/70 Heading C1A Acicular alpha-ferric oxide hydrate (α- FeO.OH) in the form of fine crystals is prepared by precipitating ferrous hydroxide at below 60‹ C. by pouring, under non-oxidizing conditions, a solution of a ferrous salt into a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide used in a stoichometric excess, then oxidizing at not more than 60‹ C. the so-formed ferrous hydroxide into alpha-ferric oxide hydrate, then boiling the mixture, the precipitation being performed under conditions avoiding local excesses of ferrous salt, the amount of water being maintained to ensure in the final dispersion of the alpha-ferric oxide hydrate a concentration thereof below 15 gms./lt. The alkali metal hydroxide may be NaOH or KOH and the ferrous salt may be FeSO 4 .7H 2 O or FeCl 2 . 4H 2 O. The oxidation may be performed by blowing oxygen through the dispersion.
