Abstract

1328025 Discharging static electricity LA CELLOPHANE 23 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970 18 June 1971] 44416/71 Heading H1X A method of discharging insulating material in an ambient medium comprises producing positive and negative ions in the vicinity of the insulating material by corona discharge from an electrode E1, E2 supplied with a first alternating waveform of steep energy gradient whose amplitude is high enough to ionize the ambient medium, followed by a second damped alternating waveform whose amplitude is insufficient to ionize the ambient medium. The second waveform prevents the ions from recombining but does not prevent their migration to the material to be discharged. The ambient medium may be air or nitrogen. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a thyristor bridge Th 1 , Th 2 supplied with D.C. by an auto-transformer A and full-wave rectifier P and triggered by a multi-vibrator V. The bridge is connected through an RC circuit to the primary winding of a transformer B the secondary winding of which is connected to two wires E1 and E2 connected in parallel in an earthed casing M adjacent the material to be discharged, e.g. a moving plastics film. Corona wires may be located on both sides of the film. The auto-transformer A provides a means of controlling the rate of charge removal for a given film velocity.
