1327859 Welding by fusion M BASSINO and V BASSINO [trading as SALDOMATIC DI MICHELE VITTORIO BASSINO] 28 July 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 35412/71 Heading B3R A consumable electrode wire feed device comprises two ball clamps N, M, the housing of clamp N being connected to a contact tube 2 and the housing of clamp M being fast with the piston 13 of a double-acting pneumatic cylinder I and acting on the clamp N housing through a strong compression spring 3. the arrangement being such that a forward rightward displacement of the contact tube is followed by a forward rightward, feed of the wire only. Reversal of piston movement is effected by actuation of an axially adjustable stationary electro-valve-controlling microswitch 11 by a stem 15 movable with the clamp M housing. Each of the clamps M, N comprises wire-engaging balls S pressed by a spring 9, by way of a sleeve 80, into a tapered bore 70 of the clamp housing. In operation, on forward rightward movement of clamp M, initially clamps M, N both move rightwardly, both taking along the wire. When the clamp N housing abuts the stationary cylinder I at 40, clamp M continues rightwardly, compressing the spring 3 and taking along the wire which moves through the releasing clamp N. On leftward return movement of clamp M, initially clamp N, together with the wire, is stationary, whilst clamp M releases from the wire When the clamp M housing engages the clamp N housing, both clamps move together leftwardly, both taking along the wire due to the effect of the clamp springs 90.
