Abstract

1327530 Isobutyl methacrylate copolymers; paint binder compositions ROHM GmbH 9 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 57344/71 Heading C3P Copolymers suitable for use as binders in airdrying paints comprise units of (a) 60-95% by weight of isobutyl methacrylate, (b) 3-30% by weight of an ester of acrylic acid with a C 6- C 12 alcohol, (c) 1-10% by weight of a mono- or poly-hydroxyalkyl ester or mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl amide of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid containing at least two carbon atoms in the hydroxyalkyl group, the said hydroxy group(s) not being bonded to the α-carbon atom of the hydroxy alkyl group, and optionally (d) up to 12% by weight of one or more other comonomers. Examples of component (b) are the n-hexyl, n-octyl, n-decyl, n-dodecyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates. Suitable as component (c) are #-hydroxy ethyl and #-hydroxy propyl (meth) acrylate, 8-hydroxy butyl acrylate, 2,3- dihydroxy propyl methacrylate, and #-hydroxy ethyl- or #-hydroxyl propyl-(meth) acrylamide. Optional monomers (d) include acrylate esters of C 1 -C 4 alcohols, methacrylate esters, styrene and vinyl toluene. The copolymers can be prepared by polymerizing the monomers in solution (e.g. in petroleum distillate) or preferably in an aqueous medium (containing e.g. magnesium carbonate dispersing agent and sodium alkylsulphonate suspension stabilizer) to produce a bead polymer; a modifier such as dodecyl mercaptan may be present and the polymerization initiated with, e.g., dilauroyl peroxide. For coating purposes, the copolymers are suitably dissolved in a solvent such as petroleum distillate, and a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, and optionally a filler, e.g. a mixture of dolomite and silicate materials, added. A soft resin such as a polyalkyl (C 4 -C 6 ) acrylate or a plasticizer such as a chloroparaffin may also be included.
