Abstract
1327492 I.C. engine exhaust cooling and recycling NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 30 June 1971 [1 April 1970] 15518/70 Heading F1B A re-cycle operation I.C. engine mounted in a pressure-tight capsule has an intake pump 34 delivering cooling water to a spray nozzle 32 in the exhaust duct 31, the used coolant being separated in a separator 37 and pumped out by a discharge pump 35, the pumps being driven by a common mechanical drive at equal or constantly proportional speeds, the discharge pump having the greater delivery rate under all conditions and the intake pump being capable of operation as a hydraulic motor to assist the drive of the discharge pump. The diesel engine 10, which is mounted in a submarine hull, drives an exhaust gas compressor 17 through a hydrostatic drive 12, 16. The inlet manifold 18 is supplied with atmospheric air from intake 20 through valve B or compressed air from air bottle 22 through valve M, a reducing valve 23 and valve C or a mixture of re-cycled exhaust gas supplied through conduit 24 and oxygen from bottle 25 through valve N reducing valves 27A, 27B, valves F, G and orifice 28. The hydrocarbon fuel is supplied from bottle 49. When the surrounding water pressure is low the intake and exhaust pumps are driven by a common electric motor 38 but at substantially higher pressures the intake pressure of pump 34 being higher than that of the exhaust gas causes the pump 34 to act as a hydraulic motor. The exhaust gases leaving separator 37 pass into the re-cycle conduit through valve E or through duct 41 to the exhaust gas compressor 17 for discharge outside the capsule. The temperature of re-cycle gas in conduit 24 can be raised by bleeding in part of the uncooled exhaust gas through conduit 44. A pump 47 and intercooler system between pipes 33 and 36 water cools the engine coolant, hydraulic fluid and exhaust compressor coolant. The pumps 34, 35 may be driven by vee belts from an engine-driven shaft.
