Abstract
1327438 Henbest reduction of 3-oxocardenolides FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 13 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 54261/70 Heading C2U 3# - Hydroxy - 5# - card - 20(22) - enolides are prepared by reduction of the corresponding 3-oxo-compounds using a trialkyl phosphite and a C 1-4 alcohol together with H 2 IrCl 6 or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof or IrCl 3 , and optionally with the addition of a mineral acid (e.g. HCl). Minor amounts of the 3α-hydroxy epimers may also be obtained. Specified products are digitoxigenin, 14- anhydrodigitoxigenin and 3-epi-14-anhydrodigitoxigenin.
