Abstract

1327399 Reticulating foamed material H HARTMEYER 2 Nov 1970 [8 Nov 1969 10 Oct 1970] 52004/70 Heading C3R Foamed material, particularly polyurethane foamed material, having partly or wholly closed cells is reticulated by discharging a high voltage high energy electrical discharge between a pair of electrodes arranged close to the material to be treated thus producing a high speed high energy shock wave passing through the material to be treated. The foamed material may be located close to and between a reflector wall capable of reflecting high speed high energy shock waves and a pair of electrodes or close to and between two pairs of electrodes. Reticulation may also take place under water. In a typical Example, a piece of polyurethane foam is placed in a stainless steel tube having a polished surface, a wire is pressed through a hole bored in the material, the ends of the wire being fixed to two electrodes, and a discharge is produced between the pair of electrodes to produce a completely open celled foam material.
