Abstract

1327394 Optical slit mechanism UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Oct 1970 [23 Oct 1969] 51919/69 Heading G2J [Also in Division H1] An adjustable slit mechanism for mass-spectrometer or other particle or optical apparatus comprises two members 4, 5 defining the slit 6, each being mounted on a pair of parallel flat springs 7, 7', 8, 8' with their flat faces normal to the slit plane and flexible connections 12, 13 of springy material which may be attached to a common adjustment member 16 moving colinear with the slit. The flat springs may be spot welded to upturned ends of members 4, 5, and fixed end supports 9, 10. Rod 16 is axially moved by calibrated knob 18 spring-loaded by spring 21 the slit width varying approximately as the square of the axial displacement of the rod. Members 4, 5 may be of 0À015 stainless steel with edges chamfered to 0À005 ins or less and overlapping when closed to ensure cut-off. In Fig. 3 (not shown), flexible connections (312), (313) are of spring wire loosely engaging a peg (338) and the slit members are spring-loaded to a closed position by a pair of wire springs (339), (340) spot welded to plate (301) at (341) and engaging holes in extensions (341) and (342). Alternatively, springs (339), (340) may hold the slit open by pulling leftwards, rightward movement of rod (316) effecting closure.
