Abstract

1327213 Alginate compositions HENKEL & CIE GmbH 27 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 41210/70 Heading C3U [Also in Division B2] Composition for application to packaged articles (see Division B2) comprises an aqueous colloid of a water-soluble alginate having pH # 6. The alginate may be a sodium, lithium, magnesium, ammonium, ethanolamine, diethanolamine or triethanolamine salt. The colloid may also contain: salts which form insoluble salts with alginic acid, e.g. calcium, barium, zinc, cadmium, tin or aluminium salts; 1-15% polyvinyl methyl ether; # 0À3% cellulose ethers, methyl starch or carboxymethyl starch; polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polyvinyl alcohol; 0À5-5% polyhydrie alcohol and/or polyalkylene glycol; polymerization product of glycerine formed by etherification of 2-12 glycerine molecules with one another; 0À1-10% fillers such as inorganic fillers, e.g. silicic acid, calcium-, aluminiumsilicate or organic fillers, e.g. starch, ground cellulose, hardened melamine or urea resins; preservatives, e.g. formalin, pentachlorophenolates, p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters. The colloid may be applied by brushing, rolling or spreading and may be applied in dots or strips. In a typical example the colloid is produced by dissolving sodium alginate in water (0À5% Na) and then adding polyvinyl methyl ether (2À5%), methylhydroxypropylcellulose (0À2%) and 35% formalin (0À2%).
