1326920 Treatment of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Nov 1971 [9 Dec 1970 13 Jan 1971] 58462/70 and 1678/71 Heading C2C Chlorinated hydrocarbon residues comprising one or more of the components (a) chlorinated tarry residues, some components of which have at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, (b) chlorinated C 4 compounds, and (c) chlorinated C 6 compounds are treated by a process which comprises introducing the residues into a fluidized bed of a supported oxychlorination catalyst, while also introducing gas comprising O 2 , the bed being at 200-500‹ C. where at least components of type (a) are treated. Cl 2 and/or HCl are also fed to the fluidized bed. The catalyst support may be of silicaalumina. The vaporized chlorinated hydrocarbons from the fluidized bed reactor may be reacted with chlorine, in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. active carbon impregnated with sodium sulphate, at 400-500‹ C., or in the absence of a catalyst at 500-700‹ C. to give carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene. Examples show that the major products of the treatment are C 2 Cl 4 , C 2 HCl 3 , C 2 H 2 Cl 4 , C 2 HCl 5 and C 4 Cl 6 .
