Abstract

1326479 Hose reels; supporting shaft D J JANSEN 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60576/71 Heading B8M A reel for flexible pipe, e.g. hose pipe, comprises a shaft 1 having a shoulder 5 between first and second portions 2, 4 of different diameters, an axial opening 3 in the first portion 2 extending from one end of the shaft to a point spaced from the shoulder and having an internal transverse dimension greater than or equal to the diameter of the second portion; a hub rotatably mounted on the shaft and forming an annular chamber 19 sealed around a part of the first portion 2 and extending from a second point spaced from the shoulder 5 to the vicinity of the shoulder, at least one slot 7 in the part of the portion 2 intersecting the shoulder 5 and completing a flow passage from an external source to the reel by way of the axial opening 3, the slot 7, the annular chamber 19, and a pipe 31 leading from the chamber 19 to a pipe on the reel drum 16. The hub of the drum is maintained in fixed axial relationship relative to the shaft by means of a radial face 20 abutting the shoulder 5 and an end disc 28 secured against the end of the shaft portion 4 and the hub portion 17. The shaft portion 2 is preferably threaded into an inlet portion 9 which is connected to a fluid source by pipe 15 and is secured to a plate 12 for attachment to a wall. In an alternative embodiment, the shaft portion 2 is made integrally with the inlet portion 9. The reel drum 16 is rotatably supported by means of spider plate 25 secured to one of the flanges 33; tie bolts 32 passing through the flanges 33, 34 and the spider plate 25 to maintain the assembled structure. The flange 34 adjacent the portion 4 of the shaft is provided with a closable aperture 38 for access to the end disc 28. The shaft is preferably made by pressing a cylindrical block of metal in a die formed with radially inwardly facing projections to make the slots. The thicker end portion of the shaft is then drilled to the required depth and diameter to remove the bottoms of the slots to form the flow passage.
