Abstract

1326455 Gasifying oil shale TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 Jan 1971 3134/71 Heading C5E Oil shale is contacted in a reaction zone 15 at a temperature in the range 750‹ to 1500‹ F. and a pressure in the range 300 to 1000 p.s.i.g. with an H 2 -rich gas 11 and with from 0.01 to 0.6 ton of H 2 O 13 per ton of shale, and an effluent stream 16 comprising shale oil vapour, spent shale, H 2 O, H 2 , and carbon oxides is withdrawn from the zone. The zone 15 may comprise a fixed or fluidizied bed, a tubular retort (as shown), or a fractured subterranean stratum, and the zone may be externally heated or rely on the heat in the streams 11, 13. In the embodiment illustrated, the shale is slurried with recycled shale oil, the H 2 -rich gas comprises recycle H 2 , CO and CH 4 in line 12 mixed with gas 10 from a shale oil gasifier 9, and the H 2 O comprises recycle water. Shale oil is hydrorefined in a fixed bed catalytic reactor 49 from which unreacted H 2 , carbon oxides and CH 4 are recycled via 52, 54, 33. H 2 in the line 11 should amount to between 5000 and 20,000 SCF per ton of shale, and other liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons may be substituted for shale oil in the gasifier 9.
