Abstract

1326227 Removing oils from aqueous phases MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 13 Oct 1970 [14 Oct 1969] 48661/70 Heading BID Floating oily liquid is removed from an aqueous phase by immersing therein a porous vessel made of oleophilic fibres, through which oily liquid preferentially passes to the interior, to be removed by pumping or pouring off. Applications include removing oil slicks from water and molten fat from soup. The device illustrated comprises a two-part hinged frame over which a flat sheet of the fibrous material is stretched with its edges clamped between the two parts which lock together at 5. The handle 2 enables the vessel formed by the sheet to be lifted periodically from the. mixture and emptied. Alternatively a porous vessel could be closed and connected to a suction pump which draws the oil into the vessel. Fibrous materials listed include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, poly 4-methylpentene, parylene and styrene polymers. Fibre diameter ranges and densities of the fibrous material relative to fibre density are exemplified. Some materials need wetting with oil before the preferential flow begins, others are merely placed dry in the mixture.
