1326014 Carboxylic acids and esters JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO Ltd 6 July 1970 [14 July 1969] 15294/73 Divided out of 1326012 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids or esters are produced by the carboxylation of alcohols with CO using as catalyst a composition prepared by adding a stabilizing donor ligand to a solution contain ing a strong acid and any of M 2 <SP>4+</SP>, M 2 (O 2 CR)<SP>n+</SP> 4-n , M 2 (OCSR)<SP>n+</SP> 4-n and M 2 (S 2 CR)<SP>n+</SP> 4-n , wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, R is alkyl or aryl and may be substituted and M is a transition metal. Preferably, a halogen promoter is present. Stabilizing donor ligands are defined as organic isocyanides; other organic compounds, other than alcohols, having in the molecule an atom of an element of Group VB or VIB in a valency state such that it possesses a lone pair of electrons; or a stannous or germanium II halide. In the example acetic acid is produced by the carbonylation of methanol having dissolved therein Rh 2 (O 2 CCH 3 ) 2 , HBF 4 , P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 and CH 3 I.
