1325911 Alcohol-ketone exchange DOW CHEMICAL CO 5 Oct 1970 47267/70 Heading C2C An alcohol or a ketone is prepared by conducting a liquid phase exchange reaction between a secondary alcohol and a ketone in the presence of an exchange catalyst at a temperature of 150 to 300‹ C. at least the autogenous pressure of the system the alcohol having the formula and the ketone having the formula R 1 CO.R 1 where each R and R 1 is alkyl or phenyl, either unsubstituted or substituted by groups inert under the reaction conditions, said groups being halo, amino, cyano, C 1-6 alkyl or phenyl and where two R groups or two R 1 groups are taken together the alcohol or ketone is a cycloalkanol or cycloalkanone having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, and wherein the exchange catalyst is activated alumina.
