Abstract

1325886 Making a refractory article from glass OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 17 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 44357/70 Heading C1M A hard refractory article is made from frit of a lithia-alumina-silica glass by melting finely divided glass batch ingredients held together by a binder such as ethyl silicate to form a molten glass, cooling the molten glass to form a frit which is then comminuted to a particle size of less than 100 microns, mixing the frit with a second binder to form a green article and finally firing green article to a hard refractory article. The glass frit is preferably produced by forming the batch ingredients and binder into a rod and feeding the rod into a furnace to form glass droplets which fall into water. The second binder is preferably an epoxy resin with a curing agent, the green article being cured for 2 hours in air and then fired at a temperature between 1800‹ and 2200‹ F. Other suitable binders include polyethylene glycol, a chlorinated naphthylene, polyvinyl acetate, phenol formaldehyde, resin and monobasic ammonium phosphate. The glass preferably has a mole ratio of lithia: alumina : silica of between 1 : 1 : 7À5 and 1 : 1 : 17.
