1325818 Producing platinum ORDENA LENINA INSTITUT OBSCHEI I NEORGANICHESKOI KHIMII IMENI N S KURNAKOVA AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 8 Dec 1971 57102/71 Heading C7D [Also in Divisions B1 and C1] A method of producing finely-dispersed platinum comprises treating potassium tetranitroplatinum (II), K 2 [Pt (NO 2 ) 4 ] or platinum (II) dinitrodiamine, Pt (NH 3 NO 2 ) 2 , with sulphuric acid at 100-200‹C. reducing the resulting complex aquosulphates with hydrazine hydrate or aqueous alkali solution, and isolating the platinum product. The treatment with sulphuric acid is carried out in aqueous solution, and the complex aquosulphates are precipitated, filtered washed and dried. If hydrazine hydrate is used as reductant, the dried intermediate is suspended in distilled water before the hydrazine is added; the finely dispersed platinum is filtered out washed and dried. A similar reducing process is employed with 10-30% aqueous alkali solution e.g. KOH, but if only 5% KOH is used then a dihydroxosulphate is produced which dissolves in water and is reduced completely from the aqueous solution on active charcoal without using any other reductant.
