1325045 Photo-electric scale read-out DR JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN 31 July 1970 [31 July 19691 37209/70 Heading G1A In an apparatus for measuring lengths or angles, the graduation intervals of a scale each contain a plurality of successive sections along the scale to which a scanning device is responsive and each section is adapted to cause a response related to the position of the section in the graduation interval, the length of the scanning device being equal to or less than the length of a section and producing a response which varies progressively over a graduation interval. A plurality of scanning units spaced apart by a predetermined fraction of the graduation interval may be provided. The scale may be in the form of a plurality of parallel tracks from which coded values may be read electro-optically, capacitively or inductively and the different properties may be obtained by line formations or areal inclusions. Fig. 1 shows two photo-cells E 1 , E 2 , mounted on a plate 4 and receiving light reflected by the scale 3, light passing to and from the scale through scanning slits 4.
