Abstract

1324916 Adjustable backrests WIESNERHAGER K G 8 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 47008/71 Heading A4J A device for adjusting the angle of inclination of the backrest of an office chair comprises a pocket member 2 connected to a seat plate 1 and having a holder 3 in which a backrest carrier 7 is slidably mounted, the holder being pivotally connected to the member 2 and having a gear segment 5 which is in mesh with a pinion 6 corotationally mounted on a shaft 10 on which a bearing member 11 is co-rotationally mounted, two locking pawls 15, 16 being mounted in said bearing for pivotal movement in a plane normal to the shaft and being spring urged against the internal teeth of a ratchet ring 13 which is coaxial with the shaft and is non-rotatably mounted with respect thereto. Each of the pawls blocks the bearing member against rotation in a direction in which the other pawl permits rotation. On rotation of a hand wheel 20, e.g. in a clockwise direction, a pin 18, which extends from pawl 16 parallel to the shaft is engaged and driven by a cam face (22) Fig. 4 (not shown), on the hand wheel such that pawl 16 is disengaged from the ring and on further rotation, of the hand wheel a further cam face (25) engages a pin 19 extending from the bearing member such that the bearing member moves, the shaft rotates and motion is transmitted via the pinion to the backrest. Rotation of the hand wheel 20 in an anti-clockwise direction causes disengagement of pawl 15 due to interaction between a pin 18 Á extending from pawl 15 and a cam face (21) on the hand wheel.
