Abstract
1324853 Matrix displays FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Aug 1970 37477/70 Heading G5C [Also in Divisions C4 and H2] A display system which may be used as warning lights or for instrument illumination in motor vehicles comprises an electronic switch 12 operable to connect a D.C. electroluminescent display device 10 to a substantially constant voltage D.C. power source 11, a pulse generator 13 turning the switch on periodically at a frequency sufficiently high to substantially avoid flicker in the display device, the mark/space ratio of the pulse generator being variable to change the display brightness. The mark/space ratio of the pulse generator is continuously variable from a maximum brightness condition in which a continuous signal is supplied to turn the transistor switch on, to a minimum brightness condition in which each pulse occupies only a small part of each cycle. The display device 10 may include a number of such EL elements and switching means for selectively connecting different elements to a power input of the device so that information can be displayed.
