Abstract

1324817 Boiler penthouse FOSTER WHEELER CORP 21 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 40400/70 Heading F4A A boiler penthouse 10, which forms an enclosure on top of boiler 12 to reduce heat losses from pipework etc., projecting from the boiler, is pressurized to prevent corrosive gases entering from the boiler should leaks occur. The considerable stress created because the boiler gets hotter and therefore expands more than the penthouse are reduced by the insertion of a U-shaped channel 24 in plate 34, 36 joining the penthouse to the boiler casing 16. To prevent failure of the join between the penthouse and the boiler casing 16 at the corners 38 where the stress is maximum, corrugations 44, 46, 48 running round the corner are made in plate 36 thereby allowing the corner region to be compressed diagonally outwards. Additional corrugations 66 at the corners of the U-shaped channel 42 and 50, 52 perpendicular to the boiler walls may be provided.
