1324795 Magnetic recording medium RCA CORPORATION 22 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 50332/70 Heading H1H A magnetic recording element comprises a non-magnetic substrate bearing a magnetic coating comprising magnetic chromium dioxide particles dispersed in a polymeric binder, the specific surface area of the CrO 2 being 5-30 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and the chemical structure of the binder being such that the reactivity rate constant at 120‹ C. of the CrO 2 with the binder is not more than 4 x 10<SP>-4</SP> hrs.<SP>-1</SP>. The reactivity rate constant (k) is defined as A<SP>2</SP>/2t, where A=fractional decrease in magnetic recording element retentivity. Suitable binders (which do not have H atoms available for reaction with CrO 2 to form deleterious CrOOH) are polycarbonates, vinylidene fluoride/hexafluoropropylene copolymers and polymers of formula where R is an aliphatic radical. The magnetic composition may be applied to the substrate (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) in a solvent, and magnetically orientated before hardening by removal of solvent.
