Abstract
1324759 Liquid inpusion devices PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 May 1972 [19 May 1971 31 March 1972] 22955/72 Heading A5R A device for inserting a substantially hollow coupling member 22 into bone marrow comprises an assembly of the coupling member which has a central bore for introducing fluids into the bone marrow, a striker pin 21 passing through the bore and a holder 19 for the striker pin, an elongate housing 1 in which the assembly is movably accommodated and which has either an open end or an end sealed by a diaphragm through which the striker pin can pass and a mechanism for releasing the energy stored in a compressed spring to exert a force on the holder for the striker pin to drive the stroker pin and coupling member into the bone. The elongate housing 1 has a shoulder 2 to act as a stop for the 1 has a shoulder 2 to act as a stop for the assembly. Pins 3 which pass through the skin to contact the bone may be attached to the shoulder 2 or to a member releasably attached to the shoulder. In use a cover 18 is removed to extract a pin 17 from between lugs 12 and as an outer sheath 15 is pushed towards the patient, a conical opening 16 in the end of the sheath 15 remote from the patient causes tapered ports 13, the lugs 12 to be pushed inwards releasing the member 11 which is forced downwards by a compressed spring 8.- When the striker pin and coupling member have pierced the outer layer of bone, the rest of the device is removed to leave only the coupling member in the patient's body so that fluid may be inserted or removed from the bone marrow. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) a table-like auxiliary spacer member is releasably attached to the open end of the housing by a screw-thread and has legs which pierce the skin and rest on the bone. The pointed part of the coupling member has a screwthread which penetrates the bone. The coupling member is linked to the housing so that it rotates with the housing and since the screwthreads of the auxiliary member and the coupling member are in opposite directions, the unscrewing of the housing from the auxiliary member causes the coupling member to be screw into the bone until the upper part of the coupling member rests in a recess in the upper part of the auxiliary member. In further modifications the coupling member may be attached to the striker pin holder by a bayonet joint and may have cutting blades and/or abutting faces or a table-like member to limit the depth of insertion of the coupling member into the bone.
