Abstract
1324700 Magnetic recording media STAMICARBON NV 12 Oct 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 48321/70 Heading H1H A recording medium is made by depositing on a substrate, inorganic anisotropic carrier particles loaded with permanently-magnetizable particles, and then aligning the carrier particles along their principal axes by an externallyapplied magnetic field acting on the magnetizable particles. This alignment may be effected by subjecting a suspension of the loaded carrier in a hardenable liquid to a magnetic field, between applying the suspension to the support and setting the liquid medium. The permanently-magnetizable particles may be of material that is rendered magnetizable by a thermal treatment, such treatment being applied after the loaded carrier particles have been applied to the substrate. The carrier particles may be plate-shaped, e.g. kaolinite, montmorillonite or mica, or needle-shaped, e.g. chrysotile, sepcolite, asbestos, vanadium pentoxide. In Example I, the magnetic layer is made by precipitating Co and Fe hydroxides on to V 2 O 5 particles, drying at 120‹ C., optionally reducing with H 2 at 500‹ C. and passivating, and coating on to a substrate using a hardenable liquid suspending medium. In Example II, the magnetic layer comprises kaolinate particles loaded with iron.
