Abstract

1324521 Rotary dryers INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 4 Aug 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 37569/70 Heading F4G In a Yankee dryer 10, the efficiency of removal of condensate from the shell 12 is enhanced by accelerating the steam along the surface of the condensate as the steam approaches exit orifices 52 disposed adjacent the inner surface 60 of the shell 12 and leading to exhaust manifolds 34 rotating with the shell 12, so that the steam shears condensate from the surface 60 and entrains the condensate. In an embodiment, Figs. 3 and 5, the orifices 52 are formed in a plate 50 which is secured to each exhaust manifold 34 and defines with inner surface 60 flow channels 56 each of which decreases in cross-sectional area towards the orifices 52. The total cross-sectional area of outlet tubes 64 is less than that of the inlet tubes 62 leading from the orifices 52, so as to accelerate the steam further. The manifolds 34 exhaust via outlet pipes 40 to a passageway 42 which passes through the steam inlet 28 and is coupled by a rotatable coupling 26 to an exhaust conduit 44. In another embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the flow channels 56 are of constant cross-section and extend from one side of the plate 50 only, but the steam is accelerated by passing between the first part of the plate 50 and the surface 60. The outlet tubes 64 are dispensed with, the outlet pipes 40 being connected directly to the ends of each manifold 34.
