Abstract

1324399 Moulding pipe grooves INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVIN NV 28 Aug 1970 41591/70 Heading B5A A thermoplastics pipe is given an internally grooved end by heat softening the end and pressing it over a core comprising a mandrel 1, an annular groove forming member 2 and a sleeve 3. Subsequently the sleeve is removed and the, now oversized, end of the pipe pressed or heat shrunk into contact with the newly exposed surfaces 2a and 1b of the forming member and mandrel respectively. Finally the mandrel is withdrawn and the forming member collapsed to enable its withdrawal from the pipe end. In one embodiment, see Fig. 2, the forming member comprises a series of abutting links, for example 11-14, hinged together at 30 and an unhinged link 10, the links being biased into contact by a spring 9 located in aligned passages 8 in the links. During its location upon the mandrel, the links of the forming member are all aligned as shown, and to effect removal of the member from the flared pipe end the link 10, which is outwardly tapering, is moved radially inwardly, surfaces 10a, 10b of link 10 sliding over surfaces 11a and 12a of links 11 and 12 respectively. This causes the links 11 and 12 to move toward each other thus effecting radial collapse of the member. In a second embodiment, not shown, the groove forming member consists of a series of arcuate links hinged to each other, the adjacent faces of one pair of links being unhinged. In use the links whose faces are unhinged are pivoted inwardly to cause collapse of the member.
