Abstract
1324381 9α-Methylsteroids SANDOZ Ltd 13 July 1970 [23 July 1969 8 Aug 1969] 33875/70 Heading C2U The invention comprises compounds of formula (wherein R 1 is H, Me or Et and R 2 is C 1-4 alkyl), and their preparation by cleavage of the corresponding 17,17-ethylenedioxy compounds which in turn may be prepared by reductive 11-deoxygenation of the corresponding 11-oxo compounds (for which see Specification 1,324,490). Compounds of formula are prepared from compounds of Formula VIII by the successive steps of (i) ethylidenation, e.g. with ethylidenetriphenylphosphorane, (ii) hydration of the 17-ethylidene group, e.g. by reaction with borane and then H 2 O 2 , and (iii) Birch reduction. Compounds of formula are prepared from compounds of Formula Va either in a single stage by acidic oxidation, or in two or three stages via intermediates of the group: #<SP>4</SP> - 3 - oxo - 20 - hydroxy, #<SP>5(10)</SP> - 3 - oxo- 20 - hydroxy, #<SP>2,5(10)</SP> - 3 - alkoxy - 20 - oxo, and #<SP>5(10)</SP>-3,20-dioxo. Compounds of Formula I are said to possess progestational activity.
