Abstract

1324373 Cellulosic fibres ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 10 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 43284/70 Heading B5B A process for preparing cellulosic fibres comprises the steps of deaerating a cellulosic solution, extruding the solution into a precipitating acid bath through a fibre forming device formed by sintering aggregates or from woven screens of metal or plastics material and comprising a porous extrusion means having orifices comprising at least 10% of the total extrusion surface area of the extrusion means, stretching the filaments thus formed by between 10 and 60%, washing and drying the stretched filaments and optionally cutting the filaments to form staple fibre. The orifices preferably comprise 10-35% of the total extrusion surface area, the fibre forming device being a P.T.F.E. coated or an uncoated double dutch twill stainless steel screen or a porous sintered stainless steel disc. In examples fibres are prepared from (a) a viscose solution (prepared by xanthating dissolved wood pulp and having a salt index of 1À5-7 and containing 7-12% by weight cellulose and 4 to 6% by weight NaOH, the solution being extruded at 22-55‹ C. into an acid precipitation bath; (b) an hydroxyethyl cellulose solution prepared by etherifying an alkali cellulose crumb and dissolving the etherified crumb in NaOH; and (c) an acid solution of cellulose triacetate prepared by esterification of an alkali cellulose with an acetic acid-anhydride mixture in the presence of a catalyst. The viscose and hydroxyethyl cellulose were extruded into baths containing H 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 and optionally lauryl pyridinium chloride and the cellulose acetate was extruded into an aqeuous bath containing 5 wt. per cent acetic acid and 15 wt. per cent sodium acetate.
