Abstract

1324239 Stuffer-box crimper TMM (RESEARCH) Ltd 26 May 1971 [6 March 1970] 10924/70 Heading D1F In a method of crimping filament yarn in a stuffer box, the entry end of the stuffer box is preheated prior to entry of the yarn at startup. Apparatus for crimping filament yarn comprises a stuffer box 9 having a passage 12 which has a yarn entry end and a yarn exit end, feed means, e.g. rolls 10, 11 to feed yarn to the entry end, and a heater 16 at the yarn entry end 1 and a control device for controlling the heater means independently of the feed means and operative to activate the heater means to heat the entry end of the passage 12 when the feed means are inoprative whereby to allow the suffer box to be preheated before the feed means are rendered. The heater which maintains the temperature of the entry end within predetermined times preferably comprise a cartridge 16 clamped to the wall of the stuffer box 9. The yarn 1 is taken from a supply 2, drawn between pairs of rolls 3, 4 and 6, 7, heated by heater 5 and optionally heater 8, and fed to the stuffer box 9 where it accumulates under the back pressure of a pivoted member 13 in the passage 12. The heater 16 is controlled by a thermostat, thermistor or thermocouple.
