Abstract

1323837 Feeding letters by endless conveyer belts LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 28 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35533/71 Headings B8A and B8R Letters 5 are fed from a delivery point E to a stack by a belt 30, the delivery section A of which is mounted on a movable trolley 15. The latter runs on wheels 16, 17, 19, on rails 18, 20, and is driven towards or away from the stack by the action of differential relative speeds of pulleys 36, 39, over which the belt passes. The speeds of these pulleys are equal (i.e. at the peripheral speed of the belt 30 which is driven by a drive pulley 32) until a clutch 50 (Fig. 2) is operated by a control arm 50<SP>1</SP>. This brings in a drive from the pulley 39 to a pulley 48. The latter is connected to a smaller diameter pulley 47 [coaxial and rigid with the pulley 36) by a belt drive 49. This results in a speed differential between the pulleys 36 and 39, and consequent movement of the carriage 15. As shown, the trolley moves away from the stack when the clutch 50 is engaged, but by altering the drive ratio of the pulleys 48 and 47 from greater than, to less than, unity, the direction of trolley movement may be reversed. The stack is carried by a conveyer belt 7. This is driven by a drive motor 12 controlled by a sensor switch 14 (see also Fig. 3) whenever a letter of the stack rests against a sensing arm 14. The letters are removed from the stack by the action of a suction belt 4. A sensor 28 bearing on the tail of the stack, operates a switch 26 when the stack pressure reaches a given amount. This causes engagement of a brake 24 to prevent rotation of a sprocket 25. The latter engages a chain 21 which runs in time with the conveyer belt 7. The sprocket 25 thus normally idles, but when the brake 24 is operated, it causes forward movement of the trolley, with the movement of the conveyer 7. A back-up belt 31 driven by a pulley 41 holds the letters in engagement with the belt 30.
