Abstract
1323678 Welding by pressure; weld trimming; shearing STEELWELD Ltd 30 Sept 1970 [22 Aug 1969] 42055/69 Headings B3L B3R and B3W A friction welding machine has a rotary work clamp 10, an axially movable clamp 11 and a stop member 12 associated with the axially movable clamp 11, the stop 12 being adapted to be abutted by the workpiece 18 to carry the axial load thereon during welding and being movable transversely of the work axis to allow relative movement between the clamp 11 and the work so that the weld flash 19a may be cut off while still hot by means of a cutting tool 16. Transverse movement of the stop 12 and axial movements and loading of the clamp 11 are effected hydraulically. Where, as shown, the machine axis is vertical the finished workpiece 20 may be discharged by gravity through the clamp 11 and the severed weld flash 19a blown by an air jet 14 into a shoot 15. The cutting tool 16 may be a plain disc-shaped cutter to remove the flash as a complete ring or may be formed to cut it into a number of parts; the cutting tool may also be formed in two or more parts which may be indexed into and out of shearing position each cycle.
