Abstract

1309823 Milling arcuate grooves BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 29 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 36687/70 Heading B3K In a method of finish milling preformed arcuate grooves in the periphery of, e.g. fir tree grooves in a turbine rotor 9-Fig. 1, two face cutters 1, 2, which are simultaneously rotated about centres M1, M2, are fed into the workpiece along the centres so that cutter 1 cuts flank 8 of the groove, and cutter 2 cuts the flank 7, the centres M1, M2, of the cutters being moved during cutting until they coincide with centre M, whereupon the required width of groove is reached, the centres then being moved apart so that the cutters can be retracted from the finished groove. Cutters 1, 2, are supported in a milling machine headstock by means of bearings 5, 6, Fig. 3, mounted in carrier rings 3, 4, which are carried in arms 11, 12, pivoted to a base plate 14 by a pin 10. The pivoting so as to vary the positions of centres M1, M2, is carried out by cams 17, operated by a gear motor 18, and the cutters are rotated by a driver disc 24 having a centre M, the disc being connected to cutters 1, 2, by links 19, 20. Cutters 1, 2, may have inserted tool tips brazed or screwed thereto.
