Abstract

1323520 Apparatus for preventing oil pollution TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Dec 1971 60197/71 Heading BID [Also in Division E1] Apparatus for gravity separating of oil and water and preventing pollution of a large body of water by an oil-containing discharge comprises a caisson 21 which is arranged upright in the body of water so that the bottom 28 is sunk into the bed of the body of water and its top extends above the water surface (Fig. 1 not shown). A body of water is thus enclosed within the caisson and can only communicate with the main body of water through openings 32-35 which are adjacent the bottom. Oil-polluted water is fed into the caisson through inlet pipe 38 with horizontal inlet holes 39. The oil floats on the surface of the water and hence remains trapped within the caisson whilst the water can circulate through the lower openings. Oil is removed periodically as necessary to prevent its accumulation allowing escape through the lower holes. The top of the caisson is arranged to be sufficiently above the water surface to prevent waves washing over the top into the caisson.
