Abstract

1323368 Soil stabilization LOSENHAUSEN MASCHINENBAU AG 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 26019/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division G1] In order to determine when the density of soil compacted by a dynamic (i.e. vibratory) soil compacting machine has reached a value such that the machine may be moved on, means are provided for determining the peak force or acceleration of the working plate of the machine at impact and for providing a regulating signal when this value (a) is not succeeded by a higher peak value within a specified time or (b) is above a predetermined threshold. As shown in Fig. 1 a working plate 10 is provided with force measuring strain gauges 18, 25, 25', 26, 26' and accelerometer 28, 30. Their outputs are combined at 32 (Fig. 2), to provide an output indicative of the impact impulses (P in Fig. 4 not shown). Low level pulses are eliminated at 34 and the pulses are fed to a register 36 producing a stepped waveform whose amplitude corresponds to the last increased peak amplitude of the pulses (36' in Fig. 4). This signal is compared with an upper level value at 38 and differentiated at 40 producing pulses at the steps. Each of these restarts a timing -circuit 42, which if it runs through its full period, provides a regulating signal to actuate a lamp (viewed by a machine operator) or a control circuit 48 to effect movement of the machine. If an impulse exceeds the level set at 38 the stepped waveform achieves a maximum amplitude which cannot be exceeded by a succeeding pulse so ensuring the production of the regulating signal. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) an accelerometer comprises a ferrite mass 56 spring loaded to engage and complete the magnetic circuit of an electromagnet. This mass being urged away under accelerations of above a predetermined limit 30 increasing the reluctance and providing a regulating signal.
