Abstract

1,182,027. Frequency discriminators. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 12 June, 1968, No. 27822/68. Heading H3A. [Also in Division G1] A circuit for detecting a periodic frequency fluctuation superimposed on a randomly distributed train of pulses comprises a leaky integrator producing a corresponding periodic signal, means generating first and second signals when the periodic signal exceeds a first voltage and falls below a second voltage respectively and a circuit responsive to the first and second signals to produce a pulse for each cycle of the periodic signal. The train of pulses is applied through an input amplifier 50, Fig. 3, to a monostable pulse shaper circuit 52 having a time constant controlled by RV1. The shaped pulses are passed by an emitter follower 54 to a diode pump circuit 56 which produces a periodic signal with a ripple on it due to the arrival of individual pulses. The periodic signal is fed through a Darlington connected emitter follower 58 to Schmitt trigger circuits 60, 62 with their levels (adjustable by RV3 and RV4) set farther apart than the amplitude of the ripple. The negative pulse produced at the collector of TR9 as the periodic signal rises above the first level sets the bi-stable circuit 68, and the negative pulse produced at the collector of TR12 as the periodic signal falls below the second (lower) level resets circuit 68. Circuit 68 thus produces pulses at the frequency of the periodic frequency variation of the pulses applied to amplifier 50. Tachometer.-The rotational speed of a turbine shaft 14, Fig. 1, is measured by irradiating one of the bearing rollers 20a to make it gamma active. The output of a scintillation counter 22 is passed through a noise-reducing pulse height selector 30 to a circuit 34 as described above to obtain a pulse signal the frequency of which indicates the turbine speed. This signal is applied to a ratemeter 30 and oscilloscope 42 and to a counter/timer 40 and printer 44.
