Abstract
1322718 Filter elements D A G MARSHALL 19 April 1971 [29 Oct 1969] 52943/69 Headings BIT and B1D A gas filter element, particularly for an I.C. engine air intake, comprises a piece of polyurethane foam which is initially flat but is bent into annular form and has its abutting ends joined. The element may have two layers, the outer one having larger pores, and is reinforced by being contained between concentric grids in a housing (Fig. 2, not shown) and by having a supporting mesh bonded thereto. Such a mesh may be of synthetic plastics, which is applied to one layer by passing the layer under a row of extrusion nozzles in two orthogonal directions, then pressing the two layers together so that the resulting mesh 38 bonds them, before bending the layers to annular form. Alternatively, a metal mesh is heated and dipped in polyethylene powder and pressed between two layers or against one layer until the polyethylene hardens. Or the mesh is coated with polyethylene, pressed against the layer(s) and heated by passing electricity. When the layer(s) are bent to annular form, the abutting edges of the reinforcing mesh are secured by wire clips (Fig. 6, not shown), as well as the edges of the foam being bonded together. In inserting the Fig. 1 element in the Fig. 2 housing, the element is compressed axially to ensure end seals.
