Abstract

1367226 Pleated filter element PUROLATOR FILTER GmbH 25 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 34645/72 Headings BID and BIT A filter element comprises a piece of pleated paper impregnated with thermoplastic phenol resin, the peripheral or end portion of the pleated paper being compressed and heated to form an integral frame or end cap. During compression and heating paper pleats are pressed together, and the resin melts and subsequently solidifies. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates manufacture of flat pleated elements, wherein the peripheral frames are formed by a heated stamping press (8). The press elements heat the paper to between 100 and 200‹C pressure being reduced somewhat thereafter and maintained constant until the resin hardens. An initially rectangular piece of pleated paper may be bent to. flat annular form (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) or cylindrical form (Fig. 8) and peripheral frames or end caps formed by stamping or by heated rollers. Frames or end caps may extend in the medial plane of the element or in the plane of its fold lines or normally thereto. Sealing strips 45, 46 in Fig. 10 may be formed by profiling the frame 44 in manufacture or vulcanised thereto afterwards. Elements may be reinforced by intermediate ribs 83, 84 formed in the same way and at the same time as the frame 80. In Figs. 11, 12 (not shown) a wire mesh layer reinforces the element and is pressed into its peripheral frame. A plurality of elements may be connected in parallel by bonding their frames together (Fig. 9 not shown).
