Abstract

1,045,309. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. July 30, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 30257/63. Headings B1D and B1T. A filter cartridge, e.g. as used to filter the air supplied to the carburettor of an i.c. engine, comprises a filter batt 10 formed of randomly disposed fibres and having its opposite marginal portions compressed and bonded to form thin lips 13 (Fig. 4), the batt 10 being disposed over a pervious metal screen 12 and anchored to it along each lip 13, the batt-covered screen 12 being bent into the form of a cylinder with one screen and fastened to the other, and annular plastic end caps 11 (Fig. 3) moulded to the top and bottom of the cylindershaped filter so that a lip 13 of the batt 10 is embedded in each cap 11. The screen 12 is preferably of woven wire. The batt 10 may be laid over a screen 12 having the same dimensions whereupon the batt 10 is bonded to the screen 12 along its lips 13, or the screen 12 can be formed slightly wider than the batt 10 so that the edges of the screen can be folded over into clamping engagement with the lips 13. The ends of the screen 12 overlap and are secured together by riveting, stapling or spot welding, a clamping strip 14 preferably being secured over the resulting joint. The batt may be formed primarily of fully crimped 42 denier per filament cellulose diacetate or viscose fibres from 1 to 4 inches long, preferably from 2 to 3 inches long; and if a tighter filter is desired, fine fibres may be intermixed with such coarse fibres. The fibres should be bonded one to another at their intersections. The batt may be formed of a single sheet of fibres or two or more or these sheets plied together. After the bonded lips have been formed, a few percent by weight of an oil, preferably one which retains its dust holding property for a long period of time and which has an affinity for water, may be applied to the batt. The moisture retained by such oil affords fine retarding properties and also prolongs the effective life of the oil. One such oil has polyolefin glycol as an essential ingredient. The mounting of the cartridge in a silencer type of air filter housing is described.
